Buyers, Exports & Processing Information for Sunflowers

The largest producer of the three Prairie Provinces, Manitoba has been growing sunflower seed since the early 1940s.

In 2001, 155,000 acres of sunflowers were planted and 140,000 acres harvested to produce 204.7 million pounds of seed, 8.8 percent less than the 2000 crop and only 44.5 percent of the record 1979 crop of 460.0 million pounds. Manitoba produced 89 percent of the Canadian sunflower seed crop in 2001, down from a high of 96.0 percent in 1981.

Yields averaged 1,462 pounds per acre in 2001 compared to a 10-year average of 1,354 pounds per acre and 1,550 pounds per acre in 2000. The largest average yield on record was 1,586 pounds per acre in 1990.
